I know that I blogged this luscious shawl when I had it listed, but it's been a couple of years ago and I can't find it now. Soooooooo I really think it bears repeating, since I have found the crochet pattern to make this lovely. That was the question I received numerous times while I had it listed, and before it went to a new and loving home.

As you can see, the one I had wasn't quite as shaggy and fluffy as the one in the photo, but that is due to the type yarn that was used. I do believe that the maker can do what they wish and have it extremely full or less so.

1971 Revisited The Hippie Peasant Dress

When I found this pattern in my stash the other day it brought back so many memories...... The summer and fall of 1971. I had this dress and wore it to death....literally, until it was a rag.

It was so comfortable and appropriate to wear anywhere at anytime of the day.

What is a Skirt?

According to Webster’s Dictionary:

Definition of SKIRT

a (1) : a free-hanging part of an outer garment or undergarment extending from the waist down (2) : a separate free-hanging outer garment or undergarment usually worn by women and girls covering some or all of the body from the waist down b : either of two usually leather flaps on a saddle covering the bars on which the stirrups are hung c : a cloth facing that hangs from the bottom edge or across the front of a piece of furniture d : the lower branches of a tree when near the ground

There are three major silhouettes where skirts are concerned. But those silhouettes can be achieved through various design and construction methods.

Flared: Narrower at the hip than at the hemline.

A-Line; Fitted at the hip and gradually widens towards the hem, giving the impression of the shape of a capital letter A.

Godets; Flared triangular sections inserted into garments.

Gored; Vertical strips of fabric that are narrow at the top and wide at the bottom.

Paneled; Strips of fabric the same size at top and bottom.

Tiered; Horizontal strips of fabric gathered and sewn together to form a skirt wider at the hem.

Yoked: A form fitting yoke across the hip with a fuller skirt attached. Can be pleated, gathered, paneled or gored.

Full: Flares from the waist to the hem.

Circle; Forms a complete circle when laid out on a flat surface.

Dirndl; A full gathered skirt. It has a narrower line and smaller sweep than the Bouffant.

Bouffant; Tightly gathered at the waist and flares fully at the waist and is very full at the hemline. This term was only used for a couple of years and refers to the extreme sweeps on some hemlines.

Bubble; Gathered at the waist and hemline to create a Bubble

Bell; Forms a Bell shape at the Hip and is usually a bit narrower at the hemline

Harem; A Bubble skirt that is attached to a narrow band of fabric at the hemline

Straight: Forms a straight line from the hip to the Hem.

Pencil; Very Narrow Straight Skirt

Wiggle; Narrower at the knee than at the Hip. The Wiggle skirt is like the Unicorn. It exists only in people’s imagination. Some illustrations appear to be a wiggle skirt but if it has a kick pleat or the hem circumference is as wide or wider than the hip line it is not what is considered a Wiggle Skirt.

Flounced; Straight skirt with wide ruffle, pleats or other treatment at the hem.

Pleats; Fabric is folded and stitched in place. Pleats can be stitched only at the top or part way down the entire skirt. There are several types of pleats.

Box: Two folds turned away from each other with underfolds meeting in the middle.

Inverted: Box pleats in reverse with the folds turned toward each other and meeting at the top.

Knife: Folded over one time so that all folds face in the same direction.

Accordion or Crystal: Pressed along the entire length with folds resembling the bellows of an accordion. These pleats are usually done by a commercial pleater.

Icon of the 1960's Dog Ear Collar

One of the icon's of the late 60's and early 70's was the exaggerated Dog Ear Collar. This sweet dress pattern has everything a girl could want from the era. It's a mini dress, it has a low scoop neckline, long bell sleeves, princess seams, flirty flare skirt and a choice of 2 collars. The long pointed collar attached to a neck band give the dress a peek-a-boo effect. Of course the huge dog ears are my personal favorite, but if I were making this adorable dress to wear, I would choose the view not shown. I would give it the scoop neck and have the dog ears attached to the neck band for a peek-a-boo dog ear look. But any way you make it, this pattern is a definite WINNER!

True Vintage versus Vintage Style

I received the following email this morning:

"Hello,

Below is a copy of my receipt and the recipent just advised me that the wrong size was shipped. Please advise the best way to exchange the pattern for a size 4 and not the size 12 that was shipped."

When I informed her that a size 4 did not exist in 1962 for sewing patterns and that the bust, waist and hip measurements given on the envelope was what you needed to utilize when buying vintage sewing patterns, she responded:

"Thank you, the recipient & I were not aware of that."

This communication, triggered me to re-post this very valuable bit of information.

Most people who sew know that a manufactured dress size and a dress pattern size have nothing in common. This guide is purely for fun and to show the changes in standard sizing for dress patterns through the years. It has nothing to do with the little tag on a dress in the department store. Sizes weren't routinely listed on all patterns until around 1940. Prior to WWII the sizing was strictly related to the bust measurement. Here is a brief look at the changes in a Size 12 from 1930-2000

1930- Bust 30 Waist 25 Hip 33	1940- Bust 30 Waist 25 Hip 33
1955- Bust 30 Waist 24 Hip 33	1960-Bust 32 Waist 25 Hip 34
1970-Bust 34 Waist 25.5 Hip 36	1975-2000 Bust 34 Waist 26.5 Hip 36

So, as you can see there is quite a difference in the fit, silhouette, and sizing of vintage patterns throughout the past 60 years.

Most Pattern sellers will list the Bust Size in the title of the listing so you can browse at your leisure instead of plowing through multiple listing only to find the pattern won't fit. An experienced and talented person who sews can always moderate and alter a pattern up or down, but it's nice to know what you are getting from the beginning.

And to add a new addendum for those just entering the world of true Vintage and not Vintage Style. True vintage sewing patterns are not easily found and can't be produced with the click of a finger. They are no longer manufactured, and those offered for sale are found in various places in various conditions and they are old. They weren't printed last week or even last year. Your seller has found them in an Estate Sale or some other type of situation and they have taken the time to check the pieces and make sure the pattern is complete and if it has been used lovingly or abused terribly. So please read the descriptions and make your purchasing decisions based on your own personal needs and the information (or in some case, lack of information) given. And never hesitate to ask questions if you are in doubt.

I do. Often I fantasize about the life they lived in the wonderful clothes they left behind. This was one fiesty lady in the 50's. She loved her circle skirts and kept them all. And I'm so glad she did. Now I can pass them on to another generation who will love them too.

This is possibly my favorite. It is hand painted by Carmona and shows the premier Bullfighter of the 1940's and 1950's, Miguel Baez Litri
.

This one is unsigned, but is exquisitely done and shows the Sunset Skyline of Mexico City.

Beautiful Black on Ecru Aztec print is embellished with silver clad sequins. Scrumptious.

A Mariachi Band borders the hemline of this tie waist circle skirt. Then it is banded with colorful musical instruments, exotic flowers and Fiesta Jugs.

This one is not Mexican but is homemade with the sweetest and most fantastical mythical beasties prancing all over it.

How Silhouettes Change in 15 years 1950 to 1964

It doesn't matter if it's patterns, advertisements or actual clothing, when you are working with a large lot of fashion over a period of years, you learn to date certain silhouettes at a glance.

In listing these 4 patterns today, I realized that the finer points of the changes aren't just in the price, logo placement and art work, but in the width and length of the skirt and undergarments, placement of the waist and emphasis or lack of such, on the bust line.

This lovely 1950 party dress is strapless and fitted, but has emphasis on the hips with the peplum. The skirt is full but lays gracefully instead of being puffed up with petticoats. Skirt length is mid calf.

By 1955 the emphasis is on an Hour glass figure with a dropped waist (this style is often called a Long Torso), and very full skirt held out by layers and layers of petticoats. The skirt length drops to 3/4 of the way below the knee almost to the ankle.

In 1961 choose slim or full skirt under a fitted midriff with major emphasis on the bustline. Puffy skirt stars at the waist and is once again held out by layers of petticoats but the puff starts at the waistline, not below. Skirts are shorter but still well below the knee.

1964 brigs us slim but not the form fitting sheath of the 50's. This styling is softer and less structured and emphasizes the bust without being obvious. The waspish waist is gone and slim hips prevail. The skirt is still below the knee but higher than the past 15 years.

Pumpkins Weren't Always Just for Halloween

Before Cell Phones (or even telephones), Postcard/Greeting Cards were once the main way of letting distant friends and relatives know you were thinking about them. And some icons, we accept as tradition today, weren't always what we think they were.

For instance; ever hear of the Halloween Cabbages? Well in 1910, this card was sent to a friend or maybe a sweetheart. Kinda has a Valentine ring to it, doesn't it?

And we traditionally think of Jack-O-Lanterns as lighting the porch on Halloween for Trick or Treater's, but in 1908..........these children were hiding behind the pumpkin to watch the Turkey.

Does This Make my Backside Look Big?

Body image and perception is and has been major factor in fashion for centuries. Emphasis on particular body parts change as often as the weather.

Today we'll take a brief walk through a 30 year span where body styles made some drastic changes.

In the 1930's the emphasis was on softness..........soft bodies, and soft fabrics. Non structure is seen in not only the fashions but in the beautiful models who showed the fashions. The Bust to Waist ratio was minimal and the overall look was feminine and rounded.

The 1940s was more structured and tailored. Still very little emphasis on Bust to Waist. The lines were crisper and not as soft. As women entered the workplace in the absence of men during the war, heavier materials and a more masculine flair was introduced with broader shoulders and narrower hips.

The 1950s brought a new femininity back to fashion. As women went back into the home and women's interests, the whole silhouette changed again. Now the fashion directive was on tiny waists with form fitting sweaters and huge circle skirts that emphasized the Hour Glass Figure.

The 60s started with the same Hour Glass body image, but soon morphed into a more casual feel as women worked both in the home and outside the home. We demanded comfort as well as fashion. Pants were more accepted in casual settings than they had been previously. But close fitting pants demanded longer tops to cover them (for modesty's sake).

This brings me to today's title.............I love this sweater and would wear it in a New York Minute (as a matter of fact I did wear one comparable in 1963)...........but I can't help wondering what the photographer and the company was thinking when they did this shoot.

All I can think of is today's classic question.

Does this make my butt look big?

The Romans referred to the dog days as diēs caniculārēs and associated the hot weather with the star Sirius. They considered Sirius to be the "Dog Star" because it is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (Large Dog). Sirius is also the brightest star in the heavens besides the Sun. The term "Dog Days" was used earlier by the Greeks (see, e.g., Aristotle's Physics, 199a2).

The Dog Days originally were the days when Sirius rose just before or at the same time as sunrise (heliacal rising), which is no longer true, owing to precession of the equinoxes. The Romans sacrificed a brown dog at the beginning of the Dog Days to appease the rage of Sirius, believing that the star was the cause of the hot, sultry weather.

Dog Days were popularly believed to be an evil time "when the seas boiled, wine turned sour, dogs grew mad, and all creatures became languid, causing to man burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies" according to Brady’s Clavis Calendarium, 1813.

A couple of years ago I found these OOAK crochet bell bottoms at an Estate Sale and I recognized them immediately as something from the 70's. They were quite small and the buyer was quite happy with them. The versatility of wearing them as leggings under a mini skirt or as a swim suit cover up seemed to appeal to a wide variety of people. Young and old and large and small. I received several requests for the pattern for them and sadly I didn't have one and didn't know where to find one.

College and High School Yearbooks

We know that Fashion Magazines and Vintage sewing patterns gives us a glimpse into yesteryear. But there is nothing that gives us a Moment in Time, quite like a High School or College Yearbook. A yearbook is a Time Capsule on paper. It shows how students REALLY lived, and not a glamorized version like glossy magazines.

This beautiful girl was featured in the 1926 Locust Yearbook from East Texas College in Commerce which is now part of the A & M University.

These girls were the Pepperettes (I'm assuming that is the Pep Squad) at Beaumont High School in St Louis Missouri in 1938. The Yearbook is called The Caduceus.

Life Was Hectic for these Austin College Students in 1941, at least according to the yearbook called The Chromascope.

And even though Fashions may change, there is always a Beauty Queen who exemplifies the standards of the day. This beauty is from Peabody Teachers College in Nashville, in 1959. The yearbook is entitled The Pillar.

1964, still had it's Kings and Queens as shown in this Abilene Texas High School Yearbook the Flashlight.

What a glamorous time it was........rich fabrics, interesting construction, attention to detail..........that just don't make stuff like this anymore.

Black Linen 1930's dress from Cartwright Designed by Martha Gale. It has more than 100 buttons on it. And an early metal side zipper.

1940s Blood Red Rayon Crepe dress with the most interesting peek a boo or Keyhole neckline. And a shirred tummy panel. No makers label.

Pure Silk 1940s Rembrandt Dress with fabulous side drape.

OOAK Slipper satin strapless evening gown with crumb catcher and cummerbund and appliqued net overskirt.....also has a sweet little shoulder cape.

Another OOAK Slipper Satin gown. This one has a wonderful off shoulder Bertha Collar and luscious tiered skirt.

The Edwardian Boudoir Revisited

Dressing our Grandmothers and Great Grandmothers was not a simple task. First came the Chemise, worn next to the skin to protect both the skin and the expensive boned corset. Made from light weight cotton batiste it was washable and a lady would have several. Drawstring neckline and armholes with hook and eye closures in back. The ruffled neckline was meant to adorn a low bodice or to provide extra bulk for that Pouter Pigeon Look.

Then came the corset. The excruciating S Curve which was not only uncomfortable, but I'm sure was unhealthy.

And over the corset went the Corset Cover. More bulk, more weight but oh so beautiful. Also made of light weight cotton batiste with loads of lace and drawstring closures.

And here's the final result..........that perfect 1910 Pouter Pigeon look in all white. She looks so pristine but she must be dying from the weight of all that fabric.

Spring is here so Summer can't be far away.

Deceptively Sexy Frosted Hot Mama

It was late on Sunday afternoon, and I really didn't wanna be there, but, I went to the last day of the sale. Little ole house, not much there, till I hit the closet............I immediately spotted a couple of 50's summer dresses and just started grabbing everything in sight. Paid for em, loaded em in the car and brought em home and stacked them in the to do pile.

Monday morning I started looking through the pile and this fabric caught my eye. It is a pretty Schiffli embroidered baby blue.

The dress didn't look like much. Just a straight 50's shift with a faux jacket in back that obviously created a blouson effect. Home crafted, but well done.

And then I got it on Hera and zipped it up and wow, it fit her like it was made for her. Nice but still I'm thinking "Just a sweet little spring dress......"

Until I turned her for the profile shot.....and Wowsa! This dress is bombshell sexy all the way. Figure hugging and demure at the same time.

Lady Duff Gordon - the designer behind LUCILLE Lingerie, not Lady Duff Lingerie

So, who is Lady Duff Gordon? She was born Lucy Sutherland in 1863. After a failed marriage, she began to support herself by making dresses in her home. By 1894 she had opened her own shop in London and designed under the name 'Lucile'
In 1900, she married her business partner Sir Cosmo Duff-Gordon, who helped her to manage and grow her business into a worldwide success. 'Lucile' designs developed a following of wealthy women including royalty and popular actresses of the time, and the Lucile company eventually opened salons in New York, Paris and Chicago by the early 1900s. Lucy also designed the clothing for Theater productions and silent movies.

Lucy is said to be the first designer to stage a runway fashion show with live models that she trained to walk in her clothing. She wrote fashion columns for newspapers and Harper's Bazaar for many years during the teens. She also did a ready-wear collection that was sold by mail order through Sears around in the late teens. Young designers like Howard Greer and Edward Molyneux worked for her. She designed elegant daywear, eveningwear and lingerie.

Another part of her fame involves the Titanic. Lucy & Cosmo were passengers on the Titanic, she was even referenced in the Titanic movie as being the designer of 'naughty lingerie' . Lucy, her secretary and Cosmo were in a lifeboat that only had 12 people in it, including several crew men. Money changed hands between Cosmo and the crew men. Cosmo was accused of bribing the crew men to let him on the lifeboat but the Duff-Gordons claimed that the money was a generous gift to help the crew men until they found new jobs.

In the late Teens, Lucy lost the rights to her own name in a legal battle. A restructuring of the Lucile company was done, and Lucy lost control of the designs and was unhappy with the quality of the clothing being produced. She left the company that she founded in the early 1920s and it failed shortly after.
In London, she designed for a small private clientele under the name Lady Duff Gordon for a short time. After the death of her husband, she was said to be struggling financially. She died at age 71 in a London nursing home in 1935.

Now. The earliest info that I can find about Lady Duff lingerie is from 1934. It was a US company that produced nice quality lingerie. Lucy Lady Duff Gordon did not design for this company. She did not own this company - she was a sickly, financially strapped woman in a nursing home in London.

Why the hub-bub about Lady Duff Gordon and Lady Duff Lingerie?

A few years ago, a seller listed a Lady Duff item, and attributed to Lady Duff Gordon. A few people on ebay's Vintage Clothing and Accessories Board contacted her to give her the correct info and they were disappointed that she didn't change the auction, she just added a note at the bottom, leaving the Lady Duff Gordon info in the auction.

Recently I found another Lady Duff item on ebay, and again it was attributed to Lady Duff Gordon in the listing. The item has since sold and good for her. But hopefully her customer bought the gown because she loved it, and not because she thought the nightgown was actually designed by the real Lady Duff Gordon.
I know that two people contacted her with the correct information that Lady Duff Gordon was not involved with Lady Duff Lingerie, but for whatever reason she didn't listen.

Also in her listing, she had a photo that she has labeled 'Lady Duff Gordon 1929'. In 1929 Lady Duff Gordon would have been about 65. There is no way that the photo was Lady Duff Gordon in 1929, unless at 65 years old she had the face of a 20 year old! She also said in the listing that the gown was 1930s. But if you see the photo of the label which she included in the listing, it clearly says Rayon and NYLON. Nylon wouldn't have been used in lingerie until the mid 1940s.
So going by the 'information' in her auction, Lady Duff Gordon was a really amazing person. She was a famous designer whose company 'Lucile' was still successful 10 years after it was dissolved. She survived the Titanic. She started and designed for a new US company called 'Lady Duff' while she was sick and struggling financially in an English nursing home. She continued to design after her death, using fabric that wasn't available to the rest of the world for another 10 years!

This may seem petty and insignificant, but incorrect information like this spreads online. Now her auction is out there for anyone else looking for information about Lady Duff lingerie. If someone were to just go and search ebay completed listing looking for info, they will see that listing, and not know that the information is wrong - because she didn't have the integrity to make the changes to the listing. ebay is not a good research tool, there is so much bad info and incorrect dating on ebay and etsy, you need to look beyond them for your research.

I can understand searching Lady Duff Lingerie and in seeing info about Lady Duff Gordon, you might assume that they were related. But thorough research would prove otherwise.
The point of this post - do thorough research and if someone emails you with information, check it out, recheck your facts. Hopefully in the future, someone doing research for Lady Duff lingerie will see this post instead of that auction and know the correct information.

P.S. While doing research on 'Lucile' for this post, I discovered that Lady Duff Gordon's great-great granddaughter has revived the 'Lucile' name and is designing her own line of 'naughty lingerie'.

Viva La 1960's

The 1960's saw more radical change in fashion than any other decade. From the structured, waist cinching 50's the emphasis in the early 60's was on a straighter line that was both slimming and elongating. These examples from 1963 show that both silhouette's were popular and women could choose the most flattering style for their body type, and not be forced into a particular mold.

In 1964, as shown below, the emphasis was still on 2 piece dresses, but with the straightend waist line.

1965, has more dresses and ensembles but even the sweaters are longer and do not emphasize the waist. Skirts are straight or pleated and pants are still skinny.

1966 starts to soften a bit with more flare to the hemline by way of A line skirts and coats. Luxurious trims in fur and fringe soften the lines also.

By 1967, dresses and coats are so simple with little structural detail. But interest and curves were created with color and pattern. Lots of color and lots of texture.

1968 become a bit more subdued, earthier colors and a back to nature trend is brought on in part by the folk loving hippie movement. Even the styles for mature women reflect a more Natural look.

In 1969, color and optics once again pop up while maintaining the natural look and feel in clothing. OP Art paired with Folk Art creates some stunning fashions.

Mad Men Sweaters........Hot Hot Hot

Three SWeeeeeeet sweaters. They could be from the very late 50's but I really think they are very early 60's.........but whenever they are from they are Special........

The brown one is an unmarked fabric. It has the feel and look of an Angora blend. There is no label on it, just a Dry Cleaners tag. So that leads me to believe that it is at least a blend of natural and synthetic and not all synthetic yarn. It has a double collar and ribbed cuffs at sleeve end and waist. Bust measures 36 inches.

This pretty yellow sweater has beautiful leaves stamped on the front. Ribbed collar, cuffs and waist with grosgrain ribbon binding on the front facing. It is Orlon/Acrylic and from Devon the bust measures 34.

This Rusty Red Beauty is a Pendelton Wool and is marked a Size 38. The bust measures 40. It has a ribbed collar, cuffs and the front facing is ribbed also.........

From the Absurd to the Sublime 1989 Revisited

It was a time of extremes.........extreme hair, extreme clothing, extreme TV shows.....remember Dynasty?

The shoulder treatment of the late 80's took the best of the late 30's puff sleeves and put them together with the worst of the 40's Joan Crawford look and came up with this pattern below.........add the Carmen Miranda diagonal ruffle on the hip and what you got was an atrocious silhouette.

And then there was this lovely and flattering dress.......flat front with princess styling and those side hip pleats are soft and swingy. The wide shoulders are softened by the wide scoop neckline and sweet collar. The 3/4 sleeve version is my favorite........but whatever your taste, the 80's had it to offer.

Frank Patania Sr Silver Disc Flying Saucer

Viewed from the side, the profile of this simple and elegant pin reminds one of a Mid Century rendering of a flying saucer. This may or may not be indicative of the southwest in the 1950's and 1960s. After all Roswell is close by.

There's nothing like Silk Lingerie!

And I found a few last week. First is a darling, hand stitched Silk Flapper Slip. Straight cut bodice and hip gathers on the side. The scalloped hem is trimmed in seafoam green and all is hand hemstitched in black thread.

And this luscious 1930s side zippered slip is from Yolande and is marked Bra-Vo. It also has that wonderful 1930's Neiman Marcus label..........Hand Stitched with a fabulous criss cross uplift bustline, perfect for those late 30's and early 40's fitted midriff dresses.

Nightgowns..........what is more luxurious than a long silk gown. This one has the 1930's Neiman Marcus label but no makers label. It is also mostly hand stitched and has that bias goddet hemline.

And if you must go synthetic...there is not much better than Endear-Tafredda from Barbizon. Circa 1964, imported nylon lace and embroidery frosts the bodice of a Tafredda side-zippered slip.

But she won't so I just do what I can with it and hope for the best. After I got my chores and homework done, I put on the pants, blouse and little cropped top that's part of the new outfit that Mama had made for me to start school in. This is about the only time I get to wear pants ......... hehehe.....if Bobby comes by he'll "catch me in my slacks" and Mama won't make me change clothes. She'll just let me go. Daddy will frown, but he'll get over it. I sure do like wearing pants instead of skirts and those icky stockings.

Mama had my dress made last week and Bobby said it brings out the blue in my eyes and I like the way it looks with my new black suede flats. If I could just wear it with socks and penny loafers instead, I'd be really happy. These garters and stockings are real hard to handle after PE. I never seem to get them back on just right. But Mama says, that's the price we girls pay for wanting to look pretty. But she doesn't have to climb 2 flights of stairs to get to class every hour. At least I've got Bobby to carry my books.

Dear Diary, Church was good this morning. Joyce and I sat on the back pew and watched all the boys down front. I wore my dress and matching coat with that cute little roller hat. It mashed my hair down but I managed to get it sprayed and fluffed before Joyce and I went skating. I wore my new pleated dress to the Skating rink because it's so easy to skate in and looks good with my skates. My pink pom poms contrast nicely with the grey of the dress since Mama had the collar made in pink. I sure wish Bobby skated, but he just doesn't like to go to the Rink. But I met the cutest guy and we skated all the couples skates. I really like Bobby Vinton's new song, Roses are Red but the really fun one is to click and clack to The Wanderer by Dion...........he's so dreamy..................

Dear Diary, I LOVE Saturdays! No school. I slept kinda late this morning and after breakfast I washed my hair and set it in rollers. I have the cutest pink ruffled net roller bonnet and the elastic is not all stretched out and it went perfect with the turquoise and lavender capri outfit that I wore to the movies this afternoon. Linda and I went downtown and shopped for nail polish and then went to see Dr No with Sean Connery...........SIGH....he is so dreamy. Then after the movie we stopped at the Dairy Queen and had a Butter Pecan Sundae and went to her house to get ready for our dates tonight. Bobby and I doubled with her and Billy, since Billy does have a car. We went to the drive in and saw The Music Man. It was so much fun and the music is still ringing in my ears. I wore my new blue dress with the shaped neckline and the full skirt. Mama had the one with the straight skirt made for her and said I could have one next year when I'm 15. She's not ready for me to give up the petticoats yet.

Put on Your Best Bib and Tucker!

For a week I've been handling this pattern. Scanning, writing, listing, etc.........and every time I look at View D, that phrase pops in my mind. The tucked bib, just screams "Put on your Best Bib and Tucker"...so I decided to look up Bib and Tucker and find out exactly what that means.

Of course all of us of a certain age, remember the phrase, we grew up with it and it translated to "Put on your Sunday Go to Meetin' clothes". But where did the phrase originate and what did it originally mean?

I found several references.

On The Phrase Finder , I found this definition:

This term originated not in any figurative sense, but literally - both bibs and tuckers were items of women's clothing from the 17th to late 19th centuries.

Early bibs were somewhat like modern day bibs, although they weren't specifically used to protect clothes from spilled food as they are now. Tuckers were lace pieces fitted over the bodice - sometimes called 'pinners' or 'modesty pieces'. These were known by the late 17th century and were described by Randle Holme in The Academy of Armory, or a Storehouse of Armory and Blazon, 1688:

"A Pinner or Tucker, is a narrow piece of Cloth - which compasseth the top of a Womans Gown about the Neck part."

Tuckers, as the name suggests, were originally tucked in. Pinners differed by being pinned rather than tucked. Pinner is clearly the precursor of pinafore - originally pin-a-fore, i.e. pinned on the front.

On World Wide Word I found this which says roughly the same thing:

A tucker was a bit of lace worn around the neck and top of the bodice by 17th-18th century women, presumably something that was tucked in; the bib was closely related to our modern term — a shirt-front or covering for the breast. The expression is first recorded from the middle of the eighteenth century, initially only for women and girls, as you might expect, but later on also to men, when the words had become a fixed phrase and disengaged from their real meanings. Before then, the common expression seems to have been best bib and band (band meaning collar), also commonly used for men as well as women, which continued after the new term had come into use, though it seems to have died out at the end of the eighteenth century. The word derives from the same source as the tucker of food, but is unconnected in meaning.

But we have found a copy of this song on an Essex Orange Label #321 and it lists BILL HALEY With HALEY'S COMETS......not the usual Bill Haley and His Comets. Don't know if it is an earlier or a later version of this label. Flip side is Whatcha Gonna Do

This whole train of thought started with an Estate Sale yesterday morning. There on the ladies dresser was an old billfold.........still in it's box and a pretty bright blue. I recognized the style from the late 50's when I first started carrying a billfold. I needed something to carry my student discount card for the movies (we didn't have SS numbers then and got into the movies for .10 instead of .25 with the card).

I of course, grabbed the box and immediately checked to see who's photo was included, because there was always a picture of someone in the picture folder.........and lo and behold the memories came flooding back. Ricky Nelson in all his young glory.

Of course the company who supplied this paper copy forged the name and didn't really know that Rick spelled his name RICKY not RICKIE. But who cares....the face is the same and the memories still as sharp........watching Ozzie and Harriet just to see what Rick was up to every week and wait for that closing song........and dancing at the Jr High dances and skating at the Skating Rink to Hello, Mary Lou.....SIGH. It does this old heart good to step back to a simpler time now and then.

For you youngsters who aren't familiar and for you more mature women who do remember, here's a bit of Ricky just for fun!

And just to prove the point, that the more things change the more they stay the same..........the beat may be a bit different and the clothes a little more suggestive...........but teen heart throbs thrive in every generation..........so for the young or the young at heart........here's the Jonas Brothers. (and even this old lady thinks they're kinda cute)

Hush Hush.......It's a Cover-up

No not a political cover-up but a swimsuit cover up. From almost the beginning of swimsuit's there have been swimsuit covers. Part for modesty, part for sun protection and part just because it made a prettier presentation.

Here are just a few actual cover ups that I have found. Some are the actual garment and some are Magazine articles and advertisements and there are even a couple of patterns for you to make your own swimsuit and cover-up.

This little organdy skirt is featured in a 1951 Holiday Magazine article 5 page Fashion spread from 1951 showing the latest in bathing suit fashions. Designers included are Tina Leser, Carolyn Schnurer, Annis Originals, Sea Nymph, Caltex, Bestlyne, Cole of California, Rose Marie Reid, Jantzen, Mabs of Hollywood, Sacony and Gantner.

Men also had their Matching sets often called Cabana Sets. Colorful vintage McGregor sportswear ad from 1948. Ad shows several different styles of sportswear for men and promotes "Sun Sets" a brilliant new color achievement in teamed water suits.

Fun Novelty Print Vintage 50s Swimsuit Cover-Up From The Lucite Box

This cotton swim cover-up is so adorable. It's from the 50s and features a print of moustached bathers, lady sunbathers and beach umbrellas. (We like the old-timey swimwear these characters from 1915 are wearing.) The short little jacket is lined in white terry cloth and has two slash pockets. It's got a cute sailor collar. It slides over your swimsuit easily as there are no closures. It looks like this has seldom if ever been worn.

Beach dress in two lengths, two piece bathing suit & hat. The sleeveless beach dress tied at shoulders is gathered to yoke and has lowered round neckline and optional purchased belt. View 1 is regular length. View 2 is above knee length. Lined, two piece bathing suit has bra top with back button closing, and shorts with elastic waistline and leg casings. The lined hat has a large brim that may be worn turned back! 1967

Back buttoned bra, dart fitted pants or shorts with center back zipper, and sleeveless, seven panel princess dress or top buttoned at back. Bra is interfaced and faced with self fabric. Back opening of dress or top and pants or shorts waistband are interfaced. Dress has applied bow at top of vent in left front seam. 1965

Vintage 70's Bright DeWeese Design Blouse Cover-up S From Glamoursurf

Vintage 70's DeWeese Design Bright print blouse top swimsuit coverup beachwear, size Small. This most likely had a matching swimsuit at one point. Nice bright all over print in shades of pink, orange, goldenrod, lavender and rust. Self fabric covered button front closure. Shirt cover up is in excellent vintage condition. No fiber content tags, we believe this to be a nylon spandex blend.

And when I found this 1949 Fashion Layout on the history of "The Bathing Suit" I thought it was the neatest thing since sliced bread. There are 8 pages (15 counting front and back) of historical swin suits and modern re-enactments of swim and bathing scenes, along with color layouts of many stars and starlettes of the summer of 1949. Including Marilyn Monroe. It a fun look at Mid Century fashion and how far fashion had come in less than 50 years. Compare to today's suits and you might be surprised.

Shades of Summers Past

We are having an unusually warm spell even for North Texas. It was in the 90's this week..........too hot for April, and we're hoping that it's not of sign of things to come. Between the hot weather and finding these 2 fabulous swimsuits one with the coverup.........I've been reminiscing about the summers of my childhood and teen years.

I grew up in the water. Literally. From Memorial Day to Labor Day my family spent every weekend at Lake Texoma camping, skiing, swiming and loafing. Not to mention Camp Fire Camp (Camp Rio Roxo) and 2 weeks vacation. During the week I spent every day at the swimming pool and was a member of the municipal Swim Team. So I went through about 5 or 6 swimsuits a summer.

One of the reasons I mention this is because it was very important to have at least 2 suits at all times. One for the lake and one for the pool. Texoma is formed from the Red River and they call it the Red River for a reason...............red sand. Red Sand kills a light colored swimsuit quicker that a cat can lick it's behind. And chlorine kills a dark colored suit the same way..........so all us girls had Pool Suits and Lake Suits.

The 2 suits I found this week came from the same Estate. Obviously she also divided her time between the pool and the lake. This first beauty is a Jantzen white over blue suit with white organdy eyelet cover up. (No need for a cover-up at the lake cause ya just threw on shorts or a towel and lived in the water)

And the 2nd pretty is a Sears Sea Stars 2 pc which still had red sand in it (but I got it all out and it's ready to go). Boy did that sand bring back memories.............warm nights, campfires on the beach, stars overhead, the boy from Dallas in the next campsite............OOPS....too much information.

Childhood Dreams and Adult Realities!

Two things have happened in the past couple of weeks to bring nostalgia bubbling forth. The first was a phone call from a dear cousin who I hear from seldom. I must admit that I don't call her either. But..........be that as it may..............we have reconnected and chat some on Facebook these days and I'm getting to know her children and grandchildren a bit through the photos and quick comments made.

As was usually the case she is "On my Back" in this picture taken in 1958.

The other thing that happened, is an Estate Sale Find of a large lot of Braniff Dinner Service and this absolutely fabulous Tote Bag. In doing a bit of research on the bag (I already was familiar with the dinner service, since I flew Brannif quite a bit way back when).........I discovered this wonderful and colorful site hosted by an ex Braniff Flight Attendent Mod Colors.

Now, you ask, what do the two have in common?

Simple. When we were the age of the photo above, we talked for hours and had major dreams of becoming the most glamourous girls on earth and being Stewardesses. We had the plans. Finish High School, get a job, get an apartment and live together and travel all over the world...........Sigh!

But that didn't happen. Apparently our dreams were a bit advanced, since we both married before we graduated from High School and the Flying the Friendly Skies became a very vague and distant memory. As a matter of fact I didn't even remember it until I was researching this bag.

Ironically, if we had succeeded with our dream we might well have been wearing those Pucci outfits. The Flying colors started in 1965 and we both graduated from High School in 1966..........so the timing was perfect, but fate had other plans for us.

I'm not tragically sad about the change in dreams, but it's fun to live vicariously through the websites of others who traveled a different path.

I'm in the process of trying to get our personal collection scanned and loaded to an album.........but in the meantime, we've revamped our Postcard categories on cemetarian, so that they are easier to find.

Here are my favorites. For some reason I prefer and collect these Linen Motor Courts. The colors and textures just appeal to me.

Barbie Turns 50 and it's Time to Find a New Home

I was too old for Barbie. By 1960, I was 12 years old and believe it, or not dating boys. Dolls were out of the question but.....I always secretly wanted her...or at least to live the life she seemed to be living. I married at 16 (1964) and thought I was living Barbie's life, but still had never held one in my hands. I saw the ads in magazines and saw the dolls in the stores.

That era (1960-Beatles) is my favorite era. Perhaps, because it helps me relive my innocence. my innocence. I divorced in 1971 and remarried in 1972 (to present Darlin' hubby) and we raised a son. No room for Barbie there...although I became extremely familiar with GI Joe and Star Wars.....it wasn't until June of 2002 when we stumbled on a lot of Barbie stuff that I got interested again....now got hooked.......but the early dolls and clothing is what I really loved.

...... I think because it reminded me of a time when everything was possible and elegant and just plain lovely, and we lived in a pre-Kennedy assassination era. Namely "Camelot". But as with all things the time has come to part with my collection. I find that maintenance and adding to the collection is too time consuming and not as much fun as it was in the beginning of my Barbie Days (at the ripe old age of 54). So I'm offering my collection as a lot this week. And you just have to see it to believe it. Walk A Way Dress And Its Rockabilly Cousin

In 1952, Butterick Pattern Co experienced a phenomenon it had not known since the 'Garibaldi Suit' of the late 1860's. They released pattern #6015, and dubbed it the 'walk-away' dress, because it was so easy you could "Start it after breakfast... walk-away in it for luncheon!". It's simple yet flattering wrap design and easy construction were what made it so popular.

The envelope back states: Here’s the smartest idea of the season….a dress that has only back, waist and shoulder seams, that has its back wrapped around to the front for a sheath-and-overskirt look. Binding finishes the edges. Wear it for any occasion.

Sales of the pattern were so great, that at one point manufacturing of all other patterns ceased, and only the 'walk-away' dress was produced until all back-orders for this dress could be filled.

The pattern was reproduced and released in the 90's under Buttericks "Retro" line, but the originals remain elusive to most collectors. Of the thousands of patterns I have collected and sold I have only had two.

And later that year Advance tried to steal Butterick's thunder with this lovely creation. It too is a wrap dress and very simple to make with only three pieces. So versatile you can whip it up to wear to the market, wear it over a sweater as a jumper, leave off a piece of the bodice and wear over a sexy jumpsuit for at home occasions or a strapless underslip for the fanciest cocktail party.

My Grandpa Watt and the Confederacy

This is my Daddy and my great-grandfather Watterson Knox Polk Ownby (WKP or Watt for short), taken in 1927. Like all young men in Middle Tennessee in 1861 he answered the call to arms and enlisted in the Infantry and later the Calvary where he was promoted to Sgt. He was captured near Hillsboro, TN Sept 17 1864 and was paroled at Camp Chase, Ohio, Feb 13 1865. Like so many Confederate Veterans he spoke little of his war years or of his time spend in the POW camp. But after moving to Texas in 1885 he did attend 2 reunions for Confederate Veterans. I have been honored to be passed these sentimentally priceless souvenirs of the reunions he attended. For more about my Ownby Family check out my Ownby page on our website.

Because these have been in my possesion for so many years and I wouldn't part with them for any price, I was surprised to find the ones below. I couldn't imagine any family member letting such a thing pass from their hands. But they did. I didn't fully realize the true rarity of these beauties until I started doing a bit of research. So I'm offering these 2 reunion pin backs on our new shop on Bonanzle.

IceStorm Fun! Birdseed Popcicles and Frozen Peanut Butter

Since I spend so much time at this computer, I had the hubby remove my widow screen so I could get photos of the birds and squirrels as they feed 4 foot from my desk.

We just had an Icestorm and the babies were hungry. But I didn't realize HOW hungry til I noticed this beauty eating a birdseed popcicle. The sleet had frozen in the bottom of the cup with the last bit of seed and he managed to dig it out and sat there for 15 minutes munching away on ice and millet.

And then I spotted this duo which is very unusual. A woodpecker and a wren sharing the same peanut butter and seed pine cone. Their friendship didn't last long but I did manage to capture it for posterity.

Puff Sleeves and Smallpox Vacinations

When I was in the First Grade in 1954, we got our Smallpox Vaccinations through the School system...........I remember it like it was yesterday. We all went down to the Municipal Building on a School Bus and stood in line for a nurse to poke us on the arm................lots of tears and lots of screaming for all those little 6 year olds.........I don't remember it hurting that much, but kinda like Childbirth.........the pain fades............

But what I do remember is the cookie and cup of Koolaid we got after the shot. Plus, we were out of school. Now after spending a total of 3 weeks in school, why would that be a treat? Who knows the mind of a 6 year old.

Anyway, the other thing I remember is..........the big honkin' sore that came up on my arm a week later...........at that time all little girls were puff sleeves that fit tight around the upper arm (not elastic)..........so what did the enterprising post depression Mom's do? Of course they cut one sleeve out of the dress................so there was a plethora of little 1st grade girls running around town with one puff sleeve and one bare arm.

This is a perfect example of the dresses we wore that year.

Of course we didn't wear the Sundress version.............even though it was warm enough here in Texas and there was no air conditioning....the concept(for Eisenhower Era Moms) was that it was September and a New School Year so you wore, New School Clothes.........WOW have Times Changed!!!!

Not often but every once in a while you hit an Estate Sale that is Sweeeet! that happened to us last week. The lady only kept 3 vintage pieces but WOW were they worth keeping.

The pale Coral Evening Gown has hundreds of prong set rhinestones across the midriff and on the Goddess bodice. A full sweep Georgette skirt and slinky acetate lining. The little black number calls for a Mambo contest in Havana in the 30's. Dance to the rhythm and when you step outside for a bit of air, the gold embroidered bolero will keep your shoulders warm. After a night on the town, slip into this luscious robe and sip that final glass of champagne.

Rest in peace my Gentle Giant

In my 60 years, I have been blessed with loving and caring family. One of my favorites was a man who stood taller than anyone in the room and had the biggest smile of anyone in the room. Gentle yet stern when necessary. My beloved Uncle Richard Donald Moore died last Sat, just weeks shy of his 88th birthday.

3rd born to Simon Luke and Johnnie Lavern Hudson Moore in Ector Texas, Richard a memorable member of a family of memorable persons. Not as tall as his Grandfather, Simon Lafayette Moore (who stood 6'8") he still dwarfed his siblings and parents. The Moore family was close. Geneva was the first born, Simon Durwood was 2nd, Dortha was 4th and My Mama Annie Marie was the baby of the family. Being the baby, Mama always called Durwood her Big Brother and Richard her Little Brother. This was always funny to me as a child, since Richard was a head taller than Durwood. But that was Mama's sense of fun. Or should I say "sense of the ridiculous".

Richard married Gladys Mae Hicks (a hometown girl who was 5 ft nuthin') and they spent 21 years in the Air Force and retired as a MSgt. After his military retirement he put his MP skills to use and served as a Captain in the Grayson County Sheriff's office. In their final retirement they moved to San Antonio and we didn't get to see them as much as we wanted to.

After his wife's death in 1987 he married Janeese Bennett who preceed him in death by just a few days. Needless to say his passing is mourned by his two daughters and 6 grandchildren, all of whom I love dearly. But this story is about a nieces' perspective of a beloved uncle. Not a daughter's story. I'll tell that one later about my own Daddy.

I recall the last time I saw my Uncle Richard. It was 8 years ago. And we had a family reunion. The first time all of us had been together since '78 when our Grandfather died. I had seen Richard through the years and even attended his weeding to Jane. My Mom and I were the only family members present but that's just because they choose to marry here in our town where Richard had worked with and knew the Judges. He wanted his prior "work family" present. That tells you how much they meant to him. At the reunion he was still the biggest smile in the room and when he smiled down on you it was the warmest feeling in the world. (Same can be said for when he frowned.............that wasn't fun). That was Mama's last outing and she didn't know where she was or who the people were for half the day. Richard and I talked and I could tell it was breaking his heart.

I hate to say it but, I'm glad that Mama doesn't comprehend so there is no need to tell her that her "Little Brother" is gone.

SISTERS! Twin Sisters. Dressing Alike for 88 Years

Born in 1915 these Identical twins loved playing jokes on the people around them.

They confused teachers in grade school and in High School they usually liked the same boy. One would flirt with a young man, leave and the other would come in putting on her act. The poor guys didn't stand a chance. The always shopped together and dressed identically. Calling to tell each other what they were wearing that day even if they weren't going to be together. One sister married twice and was in a long term relationship when she died. The other never married. In the thousands of pictures we found, there is only one of them NOT dressed alike and there are several of the Man of the Moment sandwiched between the sisters.

But like the song says "Lord help the Mister, who comes between me and my Sister, and Lord help the Sister who comes between me and my man"

Skants and Body Suits

For those of you who missed it, there was a contest over on Dress a Day for 3 patterns for a 1970's Skant pattern Simplicity 5082..........Actually there were three of them given as prizes for the best and worst Christmas Presents.

There were lots of wonderful stories and Erin had a really hard time choosing the winners. LOL. This pattern seems to be one of those Love It or Hate It type garments and the suggestions and comments on it ran long and lots of fun to read.

One of the lucky winners (who really wanted the pattern) was Sew Ducky and she has detailed the making of her pair of Skants (Skirt/pants in case you missed that reference)

One of the things that came out in all the discussions was................what to wear with Skants. Well obviously a Body Suit is perfect. So, I dug around to see what I could find in the way of Bodysuit patterns and I found a few from the 70s and some from the 90's................I wore them both times they were popular and I loved them, cause they stayed tucked into pants or skirts and moved with you.............

Designer and Couturier

Today I'm adding bunches of Coats and Suits and Jackets from all eras. 1950's, 1960's, 1970', 80's and newer.

I'm also adding several holiday Craft patterns, it not too late to grab a sweet Santa Claus and get him made in time for Christmas, or if Angels or Elves are more to your liking, I've got several of them also.

Lana Turner & James Galanos

No, they don't really have anything in common, except for the fact that they were both in Hollywood at the same time. One designed clothing and the other wore it extremely well.

The only connection they have is the fact that I got this wonderful Imitation of Life Photo Album and the Simply Stunning Chantilly Lace GALANOS Dress at the same Estate Sale. And as I was photographing and writing the listings for both I couldn't help but notice the similarity of the Lace dress Miss Turner is wearing and the Galanos Lace Dress.

That's the only connection..............except for the fact that both Turner and Galanos were outstanding in their fields.

The album was sent to the jeweler who supplied the $1,000,000 worth of jewelry worn by Lana in the film and there are 17 photos in the album with the cover letter. The album is currently listed at cemetarian on eBay.

The dress is one of the most exquisite garments I have ever had in my hands. The craftsmanship is beyond anything I have ever seen. It will be available on Monday, Nov 24th on cemetarian on eBay.

Mollie Parnis Designers to First Ladies

Born to a poor immigrant family in New York City before the turn of the century, she started working at odd jobs when she was 8 years old, and eventually built a multimillion-dollar dress business. But her interests ranged well beyond her Garment District cutting rooms. She became a skilled collector of art and of people and contributed some of her fortune to the beautification of New York and Jerusalem.

Dresses she designed were worn by First Ladies from Mamie Eisenhower to Betty Ford. Lady Bird Johnson became a a close friend and one year, one of Miss Parnis's designs was bought by four Kennedys in four separate cities.

In her office, Miss Parnis kept photographs of First Ladies wearing her designs posed with their husbands, as well as a signed photograph of Lyndon B. Johnson in a shirt she had made for him. To four Presidents, she was Mollie, but as often as she was invited to the White House, she said she could never get over the thrill of being in what she called "the President's house." Simple Beginning.

This green sequin beauty was lovingly homemade and is truly exquisite and the Black Cocktail Party dress has had the label removed but it appears to have been a Quality Garment. Organdy over dress with Maribou trim.

This heavy beaded beauty was Made in Hong Kong and has all the aspects you would except. Solid sequin top with more than 300 prong set rhinestones and thousands of orange and white and amber colored beads. The wool Hig Hugger Palazzo Pants have 130 inch leg hems, are permenately pleated and have a 4 inch beaded band around the waist.

Last but NOT least..............this gorgeous evening dress has a empire waist in front and a dipped waist in back with pleats across the bust and a demi Watteau pleat. From Alfred Bosand (designer for Miss America in 1963). STUNNING!
